Niles, IL - Chicago Regional March 2

Well the March 2013 Ban List is finally in effect.

I can't wait to see what all tops at this regional. There are several others but this one is one of the first for this format. I believe absolutely nothing will change at the beginning of this format.

You will have Mermail, Fire Fist, Wind-ups in the top with an assortment of random other decks like Hieratics, Dark World, HEROes, Macro Rabbit, ect. Don't expect this format to be any different than the last; at least till HA07 and Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy are released.

I will be taking Monomail to this regional just to test out this format and see what it has to offer.

The List:

Monsters: 24
Atlantean Dragoons x3
Atlantean Marksman x3
Atlantean Heacy Infantry x1
Mermail Abyssmegalo x3
Mermail Abyssteus x3
Mermail Abysspike x3
Mermail Abysslinde x3
Mermail Abyssgunde x2
Deep Sea Diva x3

Magic: 8
Mystical Space Typhoon x3
Monster Reborn
Dark Hole
Heavy Storm
Pot of Avarice
Mind Control

Trap: 9
Abyss-Sphere x3
Abyss-Squall x2
Torrential Tribute x2

Solemn Warning

Side Deck:
Twister x2
Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror x2
Malevolent Catastrophe x2
Kinetic Soldier x2
Overworked x1
Mirror Force x2
Soul Taker x1

Let me know what you guys think. Obviously it's only a day away but I like the feedback.

Official March 2013 Yugioh Ban List

Banned:

  • Sangan
  • Wind-up Carrier Zenmaity

Limited:

  • Wind-up Magician
  • One Day of Peace
  • Solemn Warning

Semi Limited:

  • Thunder King Rai-oh
  • Tsukuyomi
  • Advanced Ritual Art

Unlimited:

  • Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow
  • Lumnia, Lightsworn Summoner
  • Spore
  • Shien's Smoke Signal
  • Mind Crush

I will start with the top and make my way down.

Sangan - I personally think sangan is a really slow card especially for this format. Coupled with Tour Guide, it made it a bit better but in this run and gun OTK as soon as possible format sangan was just a dead draw waiting to happen. I understand why Konami did ban it, many people saw it a problem due to it being able to set up OTK and future plays but I still think it wasn't that big of an issue; especially now with 3 Mind Crush.

Wind-up Carrier Zenmaity - Well they thought this would kill Wind-ups but it hasn't. If you haven't seen yet there is another otk with wind-ups and it doesnt require call of the haunted or monster reborn. Banning this did put a dent in the usability though. Congrats on being the first banned XYZ! You deserved it!

Wind-up Magician - I am so happy that they listened to what people were saying. Most people think Wind-Up shark is an issue but Magician was the real issue because it just gets more wind-ups to play with. Wind-up Magician was the sole factor that made Wind-ups broken. Although I can see them semi-limiting shark in the near future.

One Day of Peace - This should have been limited in September. This card does not need to be at any higher than 1. Although it is a -1 for you in the long run but the stall factory for any deck is just dumb and not healthy for the game.

Solemn Warning - I am not sure why they limited this card. It doesnt make any sense, it wasn't broken or overpowered in anyway. Its a 1 for 1 and you pay a quarter of your life points. Now what they have done is created a game state of whoever gets their warning off the quickest the potential winner.

Thunder King Rai-Oh - Again, this card I am not sure why they touched it. It is a great splashable card for some control and banning Sangan made this card just a little more useless. Although most players only played 2 in the first place, they must be thinking about the future of Spellbooks.

Tsukuyomi - They should of made this card a 3 of because it is not like anyone is going to play it and there is nothing out that can take advantage of its eff.

Advanced Ritual Art - They made Demise and Herald a bit more playable. Since I have some biased towards this card, I will say only one word. Yay!

Blackwing - Kalut the Moon Shadow - Since blackwings have completely fallen off the map, they needed to do something. Unfortunately, I do not think this was the right move. They have basically made the blackwing deck a beater deck that has to attack and with all of these attack stops like D Prison, Mirror Force, ect going around, this deck will gain popularity but no higher tier status.

Lumnia, Lightsworn Summoner - I thought that this was a never interesting choice. I am unsure why they thought it being at 3 would make the pure lightsworn deck more playable since honest and charge are still at one but with Judgment Dragon at 3, we will definitely start seeing some more play of pure lightsworn. I think Konami is trying to make all older archtype decks more balanced and playable. Unfortunately, it is going to still be very tough to keep up with Prophecy, Mermail, Verz.

Spore - Shouldn't have even been at 1 in the first place. Enough said.

Shien's Smoke Signal - WHY!?!? Lets make Samurai a little bit better than it already is. Samurai already have enough support, I mean they got a dedicated structure deck. Ban Gateway and make everything else 3. Deck will be balanced.

Mind Crush - This is by far one of the most important chances to format that I can think of. With Mermails and Prophecy constantly showing you what they have in their hand this card could not have come back to 3  at a better time. You will be seeing a lot of people teching these or at least having them in the side deck and I know that dark world players will be running 3 of these as well. This card is needed for the upcoming broken decks that have shown themselves.

Overall, if I were to rate this list on 1 to 10. I would give it a 7. Although it doesn't change a lot in the format, it did take care of Wind-ups (for the most part) and One day of Peace. I do think that a lot more needed to be touched and they had a lot of room to do so but didn't. In last September's List they had made 29 changes from the previous. In this list they only made 13. I am not sure why there is such a big difference especially since this is the list we will be working off of for national and world events.

Let me know what you guys think!

March 2013 Ban List

It has been sometime since that I have written anything. Namely since the summer. I have still been maintaining uploading videos on my Youtube Channel . I will also be making a video about this short as well; since everyone else is putting in their two cents. Although, obviously, I am not a "pro" player I have been in this game since the beginning. I have been playing since Dark Duel Stories, I have seen no Forbidden/Limited list, to emergency limited Stratos, to completely killing off decks.

I think that Konami has realized much from these past few ban lists. I will have to say that they have inspired a lot of creativity with some of their choices but also not fixed many issues ie taking Wind-up hand loop and turning it into the Wind-up monster swarm. Many people think there have been a lot of issues with this format but I would beg to differ. I have not seen so much diversity in quite sometime. You used to see regional and YCS events where at least half of the top was one specific deck. Now you see it very spread out. Although Wind-up decks remain prevalent to leaning towards still being the most dominant; this is where this ban list is going to focus.

I will now break down into several sections of change and explain why I think these cards will change.

Becoming banned:
Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning - Konami is wanting to reward good players for thinking ahead and making the best plays that their decks can do. BLS is a 1 of card that punishes the players for being conservative and making smart plays. You opponent rips this off the top and process to smart your two monsters for game. I cannot tell you how often I hear about this story and I shake my head every time because it is one of those moments that are just so often but also make you angry at the same time. It is time for this soldier to be retired.

Monster Reborn - Again this is a card that is a game changer. I don't like cards that can be ripped off the top and make the game turn into a 180 in favor of the other player. With this card I have argued being balanced, the more I think about the more often I think that it is a card that has no restrictions and I don't like cards like that.

Gateway of the Six Samurai - How do I explain this....you open of this card you can make the WORST player become unbeatable. Opening Gateway can end games in an instant. I witnessed it this past weekend and I think if you want to make the deck playable but not stupid broken then this card needs to go.

People want cards like Wind-Up Magician banned but I think killing a deck does not serve the purpose of Forbidden and Limited Lists.

Off the Ban:
I think confiscation should be able to come off the list. Reason being: it is a 1 for 1 card plus you have to pay 1000 Life points to do this. People will argue that knowledge of your opponents hand is power but if you can do anything with that knowledge then it is worthless. We have 2 Solemn Warning and Solemn Judgment, life points are something that we do not have a lot of to spare. Unfortunately, this is one of those splashable cards and every deck can benefit from having this card in the deck.

Many people think that: sinister serpent, pot of greed, and magician of faith should come off the ban list. Maybe not all at the same time but off at some point. With the abundance of the water deck and how powerful it already is Sinister Serpent should not leave the ban list ever. Have a constant card that can be discarded for Abyssmegalo, Abysstues, and Abyssleed will not do the future format any favors. Pot of greed again is a splashable card that any person can play and all it will do is help that person there are absolutely no draw backs at all to this card which is why it deserve to stay on the list. Magician of Faith, I honestly can see it coming off because there really isn't any deck that can really benefit from having it in the deck expect for spellbook decks which could provide the deck the push it needs to get over the hump but it has a few of those that are coming in the upcoming sets.

Rumor of Dark Magician of Chaos is going to come back, all I can say is OTK decks will love this. I personally will be playing some sort of OTK based deck that will take advantage of it. If this card comes back Monster reborn HAS to go.

The new 1 ofs:
Deep Seas Diva - I think this card causes a lot of issues and it also can get you 3 waters in the graveyard with no thought at all. Although effect veiler and maxx "c" takes card of this issue, I still think that limiting it will hurt the water deck to make it a bit more difficult to get waters in the grave so quickly for Moulinglacia.

Wind-Up Magician - With the limiting of this card you stop the Magician-Shark OTK. Now you can still get at most Papi, Carrier, and any of rank 3 you want but that doesn't do a whole lot now a days. Most people think that Shark is the issue but its the fact that magician can special so many times.

Rekindling - With fire fists, lavals, and fire archtype in general getting so much support this card needs to get hit because it is also a no brainer card that can turn a game around with no backlash what so ever.

Rescue Rabbit - People think that it should hit the ban list because making this card Semi-Limited did nothing to the deck. Like I said previously hitting the cards that you went into would solve the issue much more effectively but that is beyond the point now. Making this card Limited will force people to play Gold Sacro which makes players wait two turns and by then the game could be too far lost.

Hitting that Semi Section
Genex Undine - I thought about limiting this card but I think it is better suited at two mainly because it still gives you the utility needed for Water decks to be competitive and also makes you draw the card that much less.

Atlantian Dragoons - This card is not only an 1800 beat stick it is also a part of the combo of the Water deck that makes it so devastating. I thought about making it Limited but I think just like E Emergency Call and Shien's Smoke Signal this cards finds it rightful place at 2.

Off the Charts:
I have been wanting to say Reborn Tengu but with Fire Fists being able to take advantage of this card I think it best stick to two it makes its effect not that effective just like Destiny Hero - Malicious (which I wish would go to three). I cannot think of a single card that should go to three at this point. All the cards that are Semi or Limited already should stay that way unless specified above. I know that I have not touched Fire Fists, Verz, or Constellars but they have either not proven themselves in both markets to make a big issue.

Feel free to comment whether you think I forgot something, I didn't touch enough, if I am an idiot, or anything you would like to question. I will respond to everything and will look forward to it!

Thanks for reading! Expect to see more whether it be about the Forbidden/Limited List, profiting, tournaments, or whatever else!

Countdown to YCS Indy - 4 Days

Here we go!

The deck I will be playing is Dark World. I have chosen dark world because I don't want to learn how to do the wind-up combos, I want to have a little bit of originality, and I don't want to have to trade/buy over rated wind-up cards. This past weekend was a Louisville regional. People were trading/sell Wind-up Rabbits SUPERS for $10. When I can go on eBay and get them for $3. What....the.....fuck.

I have everything I need for dark world. The only issue is the other stupid popular and relatively cheap deck, HEROes, is a thing. This deck gives me the biggest issues. They are heavily trap dependent as well as have chainables off the wall. I do want to play HEROes myself but I still like dark world better. We will come back to this in a little bit.

Name: Draw till you get DDV

A visual of the deck

Monsters: 17
3x Grapha
3x Snoww
3x Broww
3x Sillva
1x Beiige
2x Tour Guide
2x Cardcar D

Magic (Refuse to call them Spells): 13
3x Gates
3x Dragged Down from the Grave
2x Dark World Dealing
1x Foolish Burial
1x Card Destruction
1x Monster Reborn
1x Dark Hole
1x Heavy Storm

Trap: 10
3x Reckless Greed
2x Mind Crush
2x Deck Devastation Virus
2x Skill Drain
1x Starlight Road

Side Deck:
2x Gozen Match
2x Bottomless Trap Hole
2x Dimensional Prison
3x Mystical Space Typhoon
2x Cyber Dragon
2x Ryko
1x Fabled Raven
1x Night Assailant

Extra Deck: 15
Leviathan Dragon
Leviair the Sea Dragon
Acid Golem
Temtempo
Zenmaines
Utopia
Maestroke
Zenmaioh
Adreius
Tiras
Catastor
Black Rose Dragon
Stardust Dragon
Scrap Dragon
Chimeratech Fortress Dragon

The main purpose of the deck is to draw as much as possible to get out DDV or Skill Drain. Obviously this is to combat Wind-Ups, Gadgets, Geargias, as well any deck that run weeney monsters. Getting DDV off first turn can be killer for nearly any of the decks and it gives you some very valuable information. Their hand. I decided that getting DDV off is going to be very important at this YCS, especially since the meta is what it is!

Like I stated before HEROes is the only deck that I am really worried about. Since DDV doesnt hit HEROes and skill drain only hits stratos and their XYZ monsters. I am very worried about this match up. My side board is pretty set to combat the deck though, with bottomless, d-prison, cyber dragon and ryko. I am not sure what else I can do. I have seen some DW players siding super poly and put the dark E-Hero in their extra but I would really prefer not to do that. Any suggestions?

After Toronto Thought...

First off, Congrats to Joshua Graham, wind-ups were definitely the deck to run at Toronto. From the times I have played it, on the Dueling Network, they seem to just spam XYZ like crazy. The fact that you can get rid of 3 or 4 of them one turn, the next turn they can have another 3 or 4. I am somewhat glad about this because even with the banning of Wind-up Hunter and the Limiting of Wind-up Carrier Zenmaity, the deck isn't dead. I find the absolutely killing of archetypes really meaningless and not a good idea for Konami; especially when they are trying to sell product and advanced the game.

Like in my video, Geargias are definitely going to see a lot of play this upcoming format, same with Gadgets obviously. They did take a hit with ultimate offering being limited but it doesn't stop this deck from being in the Top Tier. They are cards you will want to look out for because now that they had such a good showing, the commons and rares will see a price spike. A card that I think will see some more side deck play is Pulling the Rug. I think it is a really good card in general and if Monarchs to come back then Pulling the Rug will be a side deck card for every deck. I also think the Mischief of the Yokai is STILL a highly underrated card. It did see some play earlier this year but it is such a good card. The only deck it doesn't really effect is Dark World mainly because they do not XYZ that much. The fact that Mischief of the Yokai can stop a XYZ summon twice is killer.

With the "leaking" (I put it in quotes because I only go off confirmed and just because it is on a few websites that probably got it from the same source does not make it so.) of T.G. Hyper Librarian and Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction as being the two cards as special edition promos in the Return of the Duelist SE Box, I do see this as a potential money mark. Although I do think that these two cards being the special edition is a bit pointless and Konami late to the plate on getting "championship level cards" to the mass public. Why would it not being Rescue Rabbit and Maxx "C", the fact that they released Effect Veiler in the SE before and Laggia and Dolkka in tins, this would be the perfect medium to put these two cards in. Either way if it is Librarian and Golem, I can still see profit to be made from this Special Edition box and these promos. I don't believe as much as Effect Veiler but still these promos will definitely help with making money back from the SE box itself.

I am still at a stand still of what to pick up because I do not see any cards going up or down in price in the near future. Obviously with wind-up winning Toronto, Wind-ups will see a price spike, same with some HERO cards because they had a really nice showing as well. I am unsure what cards will be the money cards at this point. Personally, any deck with Skill Drain will be a deck to play at YCS Indy. I think with Wind-up, Geargias, Gadgets and HEROes being so popular Skill Drain is such a good card against these.

Right now I am playing around with a Dark World build because Skill Drain complements Dark World really well. I was super excited to see that a Dark World had made the Top 8 / 16, so I am currently searching for that youtube video to see how his build was working. A few other decks that take advantage of skill drain is T.G.s and Geartown/Malefics decks. I am looking into the Geartown deck right now. I think it'll be a really good meta-call for YCS Indy.

Scaling of Return of the Duelist. Take 1

Here are the links to two videos I have done with scaling Return of the Duelist. Video 1 and Video 2.

They are associated with my youtube channel which was mainly about scaling but I am in the middle of transitioning it to become more about general Yugioh but a focus on scaling since that is what I do.

As of right now I have taken a loss on scaling Return of the Duelsit packs so far. I have pull 14 out of 17 holos, which is a 82% so overall a B-. This isn't too great but I am not going to complain about it because I could just be pulling packs a random and have like a 20% holo right.

So far I have gotten along with the Blister Weights and the Pack weights respectively (meaning blister weights are first and pack weights is second, obvious I know but some people don't):

22.02 - 12.68 - Blue Dragon Ninja
22.11 - 12.68 - Prophecy Destroyer
22.01 - 12.72 - Advanced Zone
21.89 - 12.68 - Spellbook Magician of Prophecy
21.93 - 12.59 - Bust
22.05 - 12.72 - Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon
21.96 - 12.70 - Rebound
21.95 - 12.56 - Bust
21.90 - 12.70 - Blue Dragon Ninja
21.89 - 12.65 - Void Trap Hole

22.38 - 12.66 - Number 6: Chronomaly Atlandis (Security Sticker)
22.36 - 12.60 - Number 33: Chronomaly Machu Mech (Security Sticker)
22.40 - 12.61 - Soul of Silvermountain (Security Sticker)
22.41 - 12.77 - Heroic Champion - Excalibur (Security Sticker)
22.51 - 12.64 - Silver Sentinel (Security Sticker)
22.51 - 12.62 - Noble Knight Gawayn (Security Sticker)
22.62 - 12.56 - Bust (Security Sticker)

I do want to keep you guys that read this as informed on scaling as possible. With that being said, you should not take my weights and apply them to your own scaling experience. We have found out that all weights vary from place to place. As you can see my weights have been fairly consistent with 12.60 and up is a super or better. It all depends on your area and your weights because some people may have it to where their lowest weight that yield holos is a 12.7~ or a 12.8~. If I do recall correctly, pack weights that produced holos used to be 12.9~ and up. I am assuming Konami has found a cheaper and lighter material to print their cards on; whatever the case is we can still scale them out.

It is a bit unfortunate that we have not found an easy way to find ultimates yet but sets don't typically have great ultras for us, scalers, to really worry about ultimates. At least, I have not worried about the ultimates in a set in a while. I think this past set, Return of the Duelist, has some of the more expensive ultimates but they could still be under their hype price. So prices will vary in the upcoming weeks. The current pricing can be found in this link: Price Guide. I have started up this document on Google Documents for everyone to view. Once a week I will be updating this document with the current lowest BIN (Buy It Now) on eBay for you all to have some sort of documentation to refer to. Each set will have its own tab. I will get the past sets up when I have more time to add them. Although I will only do from Duelist Revolution to current. I will also create another sheet that has cards to get/horde/sell off from older sets with their current eBay price.

It does seem, however, that Geargias will see a rise in price. They have had quite a showing in Toronto; going undefeated in the first 8 rounds of Day 1. I am pretty ancy to see how they perform tomorrow, in Day 2. My money currently is on wind-ups or HEROes because they are such an explosive deck that it is hard to come back from after their long winded turn.

Thanks for reading. I will post tomorrow after YCS Toronto is over.

Great Tech cards for 2012 Yugioh Nationals

When deciding cards for your side deck or main deck tech you have to keep in mind the Tier 1 decks. If you don't know what they are then look at my earlier post to get a good feel for what they are. If you don't feel like reading the earlier post then I'll give a short and sweet list: Chaos Dragons, Dino-Rabbit and Inzektors. I cannot fail to mention other highly used decks such as wind-ups, final countdown, dark world, HEROs, gadgets, and Stun. It is fortunate/rare that this format consists of a wide range of decks but when looking for cards to side deck this is an unfortunate occurrence. This makes fitting in the best side decks cards tedious; due to the fact that you must consider a lot of different decks that forces you to play main varying side deck cards.

My suggestion for cards in the side deck:

  • If you are playing Chaos Dragons and Inzektors:
    • Mystical Space Typhoon x3
    • Dust Tornado x2
    • Royal Decree (Only for Chaos Dragons) x2
  • If you are playing Dino-Rabbit
    • Macro Cosmos x3
    • Royal Decree x2 (If you are not playing a trap heavy build)
    • Dust Tornado x2 (If you are playing a trap heavy build)

I believe that EVERY deck needs to be side decking Soul Taker. I know that they can be a pain to get a hold of but this card is a MUST. Chaos Dragons by far is the cheapest and most competitive Tier 1 deck. You can get the entire deck (including side and extra) for under $500. That is relatively cheap for just jumping into a game and becoming competitive.

Considering that Chaos Dragon is a deck that is highly played Messenger of Peace has become another great tech card for decks that has small beaters. Personally I would only play Messenger of Peace in Inzektor decks. A great alternative for Messenger of Peace would be Level Limit Area B. This cards is going to be the secret tech card for Dino-Rabbit players. Dino-Rabbit is primarily dependent on XYZ'ing that Level Limit has very little effect on this decks plays and absolutely stops Chaos Dragons in their tracks. Due to the fact that all of the monsters are Lv4 -Tour Guides and Rykos. As well as makes Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress completely useless other than her mill effect.

Other tech cards that I would consider in the main or side Bottomless Trap Hole / Compulsory Evacuation Device. These two cards are a great choice when it comes to stopping your opponent in their tracks when they XYZ/Synchro summon monsters. I believe that Bottomless Trap Hole is overall the better card but if you are more worried about Inzektors then compulsory is your go to card. Although Bottomless Trap Hole does hit some Inzektor cards such as Inzektor Centipede and Inzektor Hopper most likely it will be destroyed from the Inzektor Hornet plays.

After reading this I hope you feel more informed. Above all else this game takes a lot of practicing and not just practicing single game games but also match with full side decking. If you do not have practice side decking then you might as well not even play. It is great knowing that your deck can win Game 1 but when it comes to Game 2 and 3 you can consider those losses due to the incompetence of your ability to side deck properly. So remember practice matches with friends or on the Duel Network it will help you immensely when you decide to play at a tournament.
